Why paper strips help

Fractions often feel abstract until you can see the whole and its equal parts. Paper strips make that visible fast. They help an adult explain what a fraction means without rushing into rules that are easy to misuse.

In this short primer, you will learn how to compare simple fractions by keeping the whole the same, folding strips into equal parts, and using clear language such as half, quarter, numerator, and denominator.

Set up the first comparison

Take two paper strips that are the same length and width. That matters because each strip stands for one whole, and the wholes must match.

Fold one strip into 2 equal parts. Unfold it. Each part is one half.

Fold the other strip into 4 equal parts. Unfold it. Each part is one quarter.

Now compare one half on the first strip with one quarter on the second strip. Because the strips began as the same whole, this is a fair comparison. You can see that one half is larger than one quarter of the same whole.

If a strip is not divided into equal parts, the pieces do not correctly show halves or quarters.

A quick way to name fractions

A fraction has two numbers:

Part What it tells you
Denominator how many equal parts the whole is split into
Numerator how many of those equal parts you are naming

So in 1/2, the denominator is 2 and the numerator is 1. In 1/4, the denominator is 4 and the numerator is 1.

An adult uses two strips that started the same size. One is folded into 2 equal parts and the other into 4 equal parts. Which statement is correct?

The key idea is the same whole. When the whole stays fixed, splitting it into 2 equal parts makes bigger pieces than splitting it into 4 equal parts. Many people first focus on the denominator alone and think the larger number means a larger fraction, which leads to the 'one quarter is larger' mistake. The 'one shaded part' idea misses that the parts are different sizes. The claim that you cannot compare them unless the folding matches is also tempting, but identical wholes make the comparison valid.
